Update on upcoming site activity, including surveys and ground investigations

Following our recent update on preparatory construction works due to begin on three parts of the Canada Water Masterplan site from October 2020, please find below details of other upcoming site activity.

Survey of Canada Water Dock wall

From 12 October, surveyors on behalf of British Land will be carrying out a condition survey of the north, north east and south dock walls in Canada Water Dock. This is to determine the condition of the dock walls. The survey includes divers using underwater specialist equipment to survey the north and north east walls below water as well as an above water survey of the walls using radar equipment.

These works will take place during the day between the 12th and 19th October (including the Saturday and Sunday), and have been agreed with Southwark Council’s Harbour Master.

Ground investigation surveys at Printworks/Leisure Park

Further ground investigation surveys are expected to begin at the Printworks/Leisure Park (see image below) during the week beginning 12th October 2020. Soil Technics, on behalf of British Land, will be carrying out these works to identify historic dock wall locations and general ground conditions on the site. The works will include digging trial pits, excavating ground and drilling boreholes. The image below shows the area where the investigations will take place. No traffic measures will be required for these works. Works are expected to complete by mid-November 2020.

Working hours will be Monday-Friday between 8am and 6pm only. There will be some noise while this work is undertaken due to the nature of the equipment used. We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.

Former Dock Offices

Contractor Mace expect to carry out some landscaping works over the weekend of 17th/18th October in the Dock Office courtyard, subject to approval from Southwark Council. This includes the removal of a tree in the courtyard, to allow for new landscaping to be put in. They will also remove some vegetation to provide access to the Dock Office from the unused car park at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre (the car park that borders Surrey Quays Road). Over this weekend (17th/18th October), access to the Dock Office courtyard from Surrey Quays Road will be closed. Access to the Dock Office will remain open from Deal Porters Way in the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park.

British Land has submitted a planning application and listed building consent to Southwark Council to carry out internal and external refurbishment works to the former Dock Offices, to preserve them as an important Grade II listed heritage asset. Some of the office space (which formally housed a business school) will also be refurbished to provide a new ‘Project Hub’ for the Canada Water Masterplan. The change of use planning application to enable delivery of the project hub and the listed building consent for refurbishment works have been assigned case reference numbers of 20/AP/2466 and 20/AP/2467 respectively. Southwark Council held a statutory consultation period between 4 September  2 October for the change of use planning application (20/AP/2466), and the statutory consultation period for the listed building consent (20/AP/2467) is between 10 September  8 October.

Subject to planning permission being granted, contractor Mace expect to begin refurbishment works later in October. You can find out more about the planning applications and refurbishment works here.
