Gas network diversion update: Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park

Share this post:

As mentioned in a previous news update, British Land is working with SGN to divert the gas main pipe located under Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park.  The gas main needs to be diverted to allow construction of the first phases of the Canada Water Masterplan, subject to planning permission for the Masterplan being granted.

Contractor JDT Utilities, who are undertaking this work on SGN’s behalf, recently moved into the next phase of works which is expected to complete in mid-October 2019, with all works finishing in spring 2020.

Diversion routes

From 13 September, an additional pedestrian diversion route which will be marshalled (option two on the image above) will be open on weekends, where required, to accommodate an increase in the number of visitors to events held locally, including those at Printworks.

Two new speed bumps will be installed along Deal Porters Way to slow traffic and a new pedestrian crossing will be in place on Deal Porters Way. A small area of hedging has been removed to create an opening for pedestrians to cross Deal Porters Way between the shopping centre car parks and work has been carried out to widen the access from the unused car park at the junction of Surrey Quays Road and Deal Porters Way.

Please note there will be no changes to the vehicle diversion route during this phase of works and there will be no disruption for those using buses or surrounding parts of the car park. Surrey Quays Shopping Centre will remain open as usual with sufficient car parking retained at all times.

Keeping in touch

We will provide further updates on the works as they progress, including the location and impact of each further phase of work before it begins.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions or concerns in advance of or during the works, please get in touch with the Canada Water Masterplan team. When appropriate, calls or queries will be diverted to SGN’s customer contact centre, where they are best placed to answer any questions. In the event of an emergency (smelling gas for example) please call the National Gas Emergency Number on 0800 111 999.
