Enabling works – Trees, landscaping and future gas main pipe diversion

Share this post:

We will be undertaking a number of enabling works relating to the Canada Water Masterplan around Surrey Quays Shopping Centre in the coming months.  These include tree and landscaping works, the relocation of a gas mains pipe and the diversion of Deal Porters Way.

The purpose of these works is to help meet future infrastructure needs on the site and to enable the first phases of construction on the Canada Water Masterplan, which is still subject to receiving planning permission, which we hope to secure in the coming months.

These enabling works are not dependent on the current planning application for the Canada Water Masterplan, but approvals are being sought through Southwark Council where appropriate.

Tree and landscaping works

We are shortly to undertake some works on a small number of trees, hedges and shrub beds in the area.  The works will include pollarding (cutting foliage back to branches), canopy reduction and in some limited instances the removal of a small number of trees. An information pack is available here outlining further details.

It’s necessary to do these works now to:

  • Clear a route to allow for a gas main pipe to be diverted (diversion can only take place at certain times of the year),
  • Prevent birds from nesting at locations which will be disturbed later this year, and
  • To clear sites for future construction work anticipated later this year.

Loss of any trees will be temporary, as additional planting will be undertaken in early 2020, and by 2023 the full landscaping works for Phase 1 of the Canada Water Masterplan are expected to be completed.

Work will begin on Wednesday 20 February 2019 and will run until Friday 15 March 2019.  The works will be undertaken by a carefully selected arboricultural specialist with extensive experience of delivering high quality work on similar projects.  They will be accredited either through the Arboricultural Association or other health, safety and quality assurance schemes. Working hours for the works will be restricted to 8am to 6pm (on weekdays only).

Gas works and the diversion of Deal Porters Way

We also need to relocate the gas main pipe which is located under the Shopping Centre car park.  This diversion will move the gas main away from the Plots where buildings A1 and A2 are to be constructed (subject to planning permission).  Local gas supplies will not be disrupted during these works and the shopping centre will remain open as usual.

The new route of the gas main pipe will be down Deal Porters Way within the shopping centre site.  In order to dig the route there will be temporary road diversions on the shopping centre site and sections of the car park will be closed off in phases.  Appropriate diversions will be put in place, and sufficient parking for shoppers will be maintained throughout.  There will be no disruption for those using buses, and pedestrian access will be maintained across the car park and around the Dock during the gas pipe works.

These works will take place from March 2019.  Further information will be communicated, including hours of working, once these details have been confirmed.
