The Canada Water Masterplan team has been concerned to learn of a number of recent incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour in the local area. We recognise and share local concerns about crime and community safety. Members of the Masterplan team regularly attend police ward panels to listen to local residents and ensure we are aware of community safety concerns and can contribute positively to their resolution. We want to contribute towards creating a place which is safe and welcoming for all of the residents of Canada Water, both now and in the future. This is why we have recently committed to donate a number of bicycle-marking kits to local police, which allow you to register your bike on a database and flag if it is stolen, preventing theft. We are also exploring how we might practically support local policing further in the future.

In terms of policing and community safety within the Canada Water Masterplan, we are in ongoing discussions with the Metropolitan Police as to whether a formal physical police presence could be provided in the new town centre. The provision will be dependent on conversations with the Metropolitan Police Property Services team who are considering what scope and facilities they may require in the future. Public realm management will balance the safety of all those using spaces with creating a welcoming environment for all – this will include customer service/security patrols to welcome and advise visitors. The area will be covered by CCTV operated from a central security control room which could also be used by the police as a hub. ‘Secure by design’ principles will also be integrated into detailed designs for each of the plots in the Masterplan.
