More than 880 pupils and family members from local primary schools took part in the Run Canada Water Run event on Sunday 13 October, enjoying an afternoon of fun and fitness as they raised money for their schools.
The event, held at Southwark Park Athletics Track, was attended by more than 1,000 people, with participants taking on the challenge of a 2km run.
Fuelled in part by over 800 pieces of fruit from our contractor Wates, entrants came from five local primary schools, including Redriff and Alfred Salter primaries, as well as Galleywall, St James and Rotherhithe schools.
In addition to the funds raised by participants, Redriff and Alfred Salter schools both received funding from British Land to support improvement projects. This contribution, in recognition of pupils’ efforts on the track, is aimed at addressing the significant funding gap for state primary schools.
Redriff will use the funding from British Land to hire a mobile swimming pool in spring 2025, which they’ll use to offer a week’s worth of swimming lessons to years 1 to 6.
“This superb community event brought so many children together from across schools in the local area to take part in running to raise money for their schools. Thank you to the organisers, to our parents for volunteering and of course to all of the children, for running their best race.” Joanna James – Headteacher of Redriff Primary School.
Run Canada Water Run was organised by UK-wide social impact initiative Run Kids Run, which brings together primary schools for fundraising fun runs.
