Gas network diversion update: Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park
1 Minute Read
As mentioned in a previous news update, British Land is working with SGN to divert the gas main pipe located under Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park. The gas main needs to be diverted to allow construction of the first phases of the Canada Water Masterplan.
Contractor JDT Utilities, who are undertaking this work on SGN’s behalf, are moving into the next phase of works during the week commencing Monday 28 October 2019. This phase of works will run through to 8 December, when Deal Porters Way will then reopen to two-way vehicular traffic for Christmas.
Location of works
The image below shows the area where work will take place from week commencing Monday 28 October as well as the associated pedestrian and vehicle diversions. [Click on the image to view a larger version]
Vehicle diversion
This phase of works will take place in Deal Porters Way, which will only be open to one-way traffic (for cars turning in from Surrey Quays Road to the shopping centre car park and petrol filling station). Vehicles turning into Deal Porters Way will be directed onto a temporary route through the unused car park to the shopping centre and car park. Please see the image above.
Vehicles leaving the shopping centre and petrol filling station will need to leave via Redriff Road and follow a marked diversion, which has been agreed with Southwark Council.
Pedestrian diversion
The pedestrian route along Deal Porters Way, including along the cobbles on the western edge of Canada Water Dock, will be temporarily closed, with a pedestrian diversion route in place (see image above).
Pedestrians will be diverted on a clearly marked route through the unused car park before using the pedestrian crossing across Deal Porters Way.
Surrey Quays Shopping Centre will remain open as usual with sufficient car parking retained at all times. Buses will also operate as usual. We apologise for any inconvenience that these diversions may cause.
Keeping in touch
We will provide further updates on the works as they progress, including the location and impact of each further phase of work before it begins.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions or concerns in advance of or during the works, please get in touch with the Canada Water Masterplan team. When appropriate, calls or queries will be diverted to SGN’s customer contact centre, where they are best placed to answer any questions. In the event of an emergency (smelling gas for example) please call the National Gas Emergency Number on 0800 111 999.
