This month, we celebrate Black History Month, and at British Land we are delighted to be included in a number of activities that celebrate the impacts and significant contributions of the African and Caribbean cultures within our community.

Below are some of the activities that are taking place across Canada Water and Rotherhithe, put on by local groups so we can all learn and be proud of the people we work with, live with and go to school with

• Bacon’s College window exhibition at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre: From 19 October – 3 November students at Bacon’s College will be showcasing how they express what Black history means to them and how it impacts them today. The students have chosen to express this in a way that they know best; some have chosen art, some fashion and others poetry. Their pieces will be shown through a window display at T&T2 oppose Tesco in Surrey Quays Shopping Centre.
• Join ‘Black Theatre Matters’, an educative discussion hosted by London Bubble Theatre: In November, London Bubble Theatre is holding a discussion on how communities of artists and theatre practitioners can create a dialogue that pushes for a more racially equal society, particularly in the age of Black Lives Matter. Hosting the event in November is a deliberate reminder that black history transcends the month we celebrate it in. • Documentary screening of Voices of Black Opera, including a live performance: In collaboration with You Press, British Land is pleased to be able to present Voices of Black Opera on Thursday 29 October. The documentary aims to address misperceptions of the divide between Black people and the opera. Cathy Hassan, Producer & Director, will join Farah Mohammoud from You Press for a Q&A, followed by a special performance by black composer and musician Juwon Ogungbe. • Bede House Youth Club: We’re proud to be supporting the Black History Month events programme of local Southwark charity – Bede House’s youth group! They are running a number of sessions at their youth centre throughout October, that include world cooking days and arts and crafts days.
