Are you a local resident aged 16-30, with spare time on your hands, and interested in a career in construction and the built environment? Then you might be interested in Construction Youth Trust’s Budding Builders programme which supports young people who are not in Education, Employment or Training to help develop the skills and experience required to access employment opportunities in the construction industry. The 8-day course is entirely free and is taking place in Bermondsey from 11th-21st February.

During the course, students complete an accredited health and safety qualification that is structured around a practical project which introduces hands-on skills such as Carpentry, Tiling or Painting and Decorating. The course also includes a visit to a live construction site, and if successful, students will gain a 5-year, renewable Green Labourer’s CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card. After the course Construction Youth Trust also offers help with career progression opportunities, such as apprenticeships and further education applications..

The Budding Builders programme is part of the wider Shaping Southwark’s Future scheme which we have been supporting in North Southwark for over a year now, together with Southwark Construction Skills Centre, United St Saviours Charity and Construction Youth Trust. The scheme aims to make young people aware of the numerous employment, skills and career development opportunities that construction works will generate over the next decade, so that local residents can benefit from these opportunities, and to tackle head-on some of the employment issues the industry is facing. Over the past year, the scheme has also seen built environment professionals volunteer a total of 371 hours across seven schools to help inspire young people into careers in the sector, with 13 of these beginning their career journey by embarking on construction related apprenticeships. In total, over 4,400 young people in Southwark have now found careers through this programme.
